We use the Library of Congress Call Number (LCCN) system: Look for the letter(s) which indicate the primary subject, and then look for the numbers(s). If an item is checked out, ask someone at the front desk to put a hold on the item. We will contact you when the item is available for you to check out.

Overview of Searching on EBSCO and PROQUEST

  1. VIDEO: Boolean Searching
    http://screencast.com/t/Hl766PaPlI8 (1:27 minutes)
When you search for: job OR advice - you get ALL the documents in the database that have these words. job AND advice - you get ONLY the documents in the database that have BOTH of these words. job NOT advice - you get all the documents in the database that have the word JOB, but EXCLUDING documents that have the word ADVICE.

  2. VIDEO: Broaden search with Truncation
    http://screencast.com/t/ceBiV0ZdWC (1:17 minutes)
Use the * to search for a word root with various endings. Nurs* finds nurse OR nurses OR nursing…

  3. VIDEO: Broaden search with Synonyms
    http://screencast.com/t/HftLBrxUy3l (46 seconds)
Add synonyms and related vocabulary terms to catch/retrieve more possible documents.

  4. VIDEO: Narrow EBSCO search with Limits
    http://screencast.com/t/ZKWFSnoU9sf (2:10 minutes)
Once you have the broad search optimized, narrow your search to gain the most relevant articles.

  5. VIDEO: DE-scriptor search; Cite suggestion link
    http://screencast.com/t/HzzYRqppw (1:45 minutes)
Use the Subject terms to refine your search. Select Subject term link to do a DE-scriptor search for all articles tagged with that description by a human. Pulls up all the articles about that subject, even if those particular descriptive words are not in the document. Ex): DE "JOB hunting" Alternate VIDEO: EBSCO DE-scriptor Search
    http://screencast.com/t/irquteXze9 (1:39 minutes)
If you open a title in the Result List to the Detailed Record, you can see how a human has tagged the article with Subject Terms. If you select one of these Subject Terms it will create a new DE-scriptor search, pulling up all the articles tagged with that Subject Term, even if those specific words are not in the document. This can create a more relevant Result List.

  6. VIDEO: EBSCO HTML versus PDF
    http://screencast.com/t/vSUeuuZTjTly (1:03 minutes)
EBSCO Full text is database dependent and may change over time. The PDF is a scan of the article as it was printed. This is the same as a photocopy of a journal in hand, and will look the same on any database.

  7. VIDEO: Search multiple databases in EBSCO
    http://screencast.com/t/YMLo10hzUYz (1:03 minutes)
Searching for job hunting advice for nurses may be too narrow of a topic. Another way to broaden your search is to select all databases available in EBSCO. Alternate VIDEO: EBSCO Multiple Databases
    http://screencast.com/t/XRrTxdzXda (38 seconds)
EBSCO is a database of databases. Searching one database at a time, such as Academic Search Premier, will allow you to take advantage of special limiters that may not be available in all the EBSCO databases. If you are not finding what you want in Academic Search Premier, however, you can choose to search all the EBSCO databases.

  8. VIDEO: Similar search in Proquest
    http://screencast.com/t/BRaWEUf2EEX (36 seconds)
It is a good idea to search in more than one database, as each database has unique sources.

  9. VIDEO: Proquest Full text – If scholarly journal search finds nothing
    http://screencast.com/t/dKnr5pI0 (2:06 minutes)
If a Proquest search for job hunting advice for nurses gets nothing when you limit to full text and scholarly journals: What do you do then? Increase number of fields searched, or use synonyms to broaden your search; Full text versus PDF; cite suggestion link.

  10. VIDEO: Proquest Databases
    http://screencast.com/t/MpJX86X8Tz (53 seconds)
The default is to search all Proquest databases. You can choose just one database to narrow your search further.
